De Loach Heritage Reserve Pino Nero

2019 De Loach Pinot Noir from California 

Well, most of you that follow this blog know that we are not able to find a lot of good Pinot Nero here in Italy.

We were in Torino for lunch when we passed a Enoteca and went in looking for a good California Cabernet Sauvignon.  I will not tell you where it is because it uses FakeBook instead of a valid website.

In any case, we came home with a 2019 De Loach Heritage Reserve 2019 California Pinot Noir.

It has been more than 23 years as I write this that I have had a good Pinot and I wanted to have my wife who has never had a good Pinot.

We bought the above wine from the FakeBook enoteca.

Since I had never seen that label, I contacted the winery and was heard from Maggie that was very kind and got information about the wine from the winemaker.

We had it with lunch today with a Thai chicken and vegetables.

The winemaker from De Loach suggested that the wine was ready to drink so we opened it.  In most cases, we would put the wine in our cantina for at least a year after the bouncing around bringing it home.

The wine had a very light nose at opening but by the end of the bottle, the nose was that of a light Pinot from those that a lot of years ago I knew.  If you have this wine, leave it another year to let the wine age a touch.

It was a pretty good wine.  The price of it was Euro 23.

We will not go to the aforementioned enoteca again because of their use of FakeBook.

We will contact the place in Italy that they bought the wine from to see if they have other Pinots or even the Cabernet that we were really looking for.

  30 June 2023 This wine was purchased from a restaurant in this area.  We had had a bottle of it for a lunch for our friend Paolino.  I thought the wine was excellent in 2021 when we tried it the first time and we knew the Pinot Noir in California is drinkable every two years, so we put it away until now.  The wine is spectacular.  It is almost as good as those in California that I had when I lived there.  The wine is "big" and will go with most meals. We have two more bottles, so the next time will be approximately 2025.  14 April 2023   We think that after the second bottle that the wine is ready to drink.  We have a third that we will open very soon.  05 May 2023 The last bottle of the 2016 Kollerhof Pinot Noir from our cellar was the best part of the lunch today.  The chicken, pasta and cabbage salad went well with the wine.  As I wrote above, the wine was ready to drink.  It was a very good wine.

J. Hofstatter 2012 Roccolo

 This is a Pinot that we picked up at a restaurant in Acqui Terme after having it at lunch one day.  The wine is 2012 but we do not remember what year we had it. In any case, it is a spectacular wine.  As a former Pinot drinker in both New Zealand and Central California, I have had some of the best ones in the world.  I was not aware that Italy made Pinot that would be on the same level as the ones I had in the other two countries. We had this on a Saturday lunch with Natalya's Dolme.  The wine was opened about 15 minutes prior to the service of the meal.  It was perfect at that time and was the same throughout the meal. I had a taste of the grape and the wood immediately.  There was a slight of acid that was gone quite quickly.  The wine, for the most part, was the same wine during the complete meal except for the tannin disappearing quite soon but returned when the bottle was almost gone. Why a blog about Pinot Nero/Noir when we drink mainly Italian wines?

Since we live at least part of the year in the Langhe, we drink mainly wines from Italy.  Our other residences are not in wine producing areas of various countries. However, when we live in the US, we drank a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and what this blog is all about, Pinot Noir.  We have had wines from New Zealand, Oregon and the Central Coast and Sonoma Valley of California.  They all make very good Pinots (also some not so good ones) which made us want to find good Pinots from Italy. We have found a few good producers of this wine in Italy and wish to show our appreciation about the grape and the efforts of the producers to make one of the most difficult wines on the planet.
